''Touching lives, Improving People'' Has P&G missed the mark?

Global mega manufacturer Proctor and Gamble (P&G) has decided to puff its chest out in an effort to boost brand awareness of its product range by putting its name in the spotlight. The accompanying tagline “Touching lives, improving people” has been selected as part of the Australian debut.

In technical terms P&G are moving from a 'branded strategy' to an 'endorsed' model.

Ten tips for retaining and attracting customers in times of turmoil

  1. Be seen to be improving and moving: No one wants to work with stagnating companies. Even a small change to your marketing can reinvigorate market interest or stabilise your position. Perception is reality, so learn to control it before it controls you.

  2. Improve your value proposition: 90% of the time the problem is not what you sell, it's how you sell it.

The Organisation in Question: Stop Badgering People & Start a Dialogue

Client surveys are a good idea. You'll obtain data and opinion on how you can improve and tweak products and services for the benefit of your client.

For the surveyor it's an exciting prospect as the myriad of questions they're about to unleash will seemingly uncover the secret on how they can get above their competition.

Do You Provide Value or Time?

As service providers we can sometimes slip into being task focused, rather than looking at the big picture with the client and asking them questions that will uncover real needs and problems.

If we stop asking questions we’re no longer seen as a ‘peer’ by the client, just someone who is told what to do.

Whose Ego Are You Satisfying?

In marketing there's a tendency to put personal priorities ahead of our clients.  What might look or sound good to us may be of little or no consequence to our client in their purchasing decision.

Everyone has been guilty of this at some time as we're all proud of what we're offering, and the effort it has taken to get to where you are.  The simple fact is though, your target audience isn't interested how you got to this point.

Sell The Outcome, Not The Process

Negative Feedback is Your Opportunity

I recently swapped my long distance calls to another provider.  When asked by the previous provider why I decided to make the move I politely said that I wasn’t happy with the service and that a previous compliant I made with them was ignored.

She said thanks and ended the call.

I was lost for words as I had thought she would have at least asked me what the problem was.  If they had better processes in place she may have even asked how the situation could be resolved, or if the situation was resolved, would I be prepared to remain a customer?
